03Garden studio, trees and new services
The house sits in a Highbury conservation area. A new single-storey extension fills the side and rear, keeping the original outrigger, and opens the ground floor to the garden through slim sliding doors beneath a slate hipped roof.
Over eighteen months we secured five planning consents for the house: the extension with new double-glazed timber windows, front door and boundary; tree works with six new trees; a timber-clad garden studio; a heat pump and air-conditioning plant inside acoustic louvres; and a new power supply.

The kitchen
Walnut, brass and marble
The kitchen, made by Roundhouse, runs the length of the extension. A wall of full-height walnut joinery hides the storage, with the appliances set flush into it.
The island is built in layers: a walnut base and a white worktop, with a brass-clad block and a dark marble slab stepping up from it. Under the vaulted ceiling, the island looks straight down the garden to the new studio.
The house
A walnut spine
Slatted walnut panelling lines the hall, with the doors cut flush into it, and leads the eye from the front of the house straight through the kitchen to the garden.
Upstairs, the bathrooms continue the same palette, with walnut against dark, veined stone.
