A single-storey glazed extension wrapping the side and rear of a Victorian back addition, opening the lower floor to the garden under a stepped glass roof.
01Glazed side and rear extension
02Stepped frameless glass roof
03Cantilevered oak and glass stair
The house is a Victorian terrace in a Hammersmith conservation area. The new extension fills the narrow side return and continues across the rear, turning a dark, divided lower floor into one open kitchen and dining space.
Planning permission was granted by Hammersmith & Fulham Council in 2013, following a revised application.
Stepped frameless glass roof over the kitchen, with trees above
The glass roof
Light down the side return
The roof steps down along the old back addition in a run of frameless glass, so the kitchen sits under open sky with the trees above.
At the end, full-height sliding doors open the dining area onto a sheltered terrace and garden.
The stair
Oak treads held in glass
Solid oak treads cantilever from the wall and are held along their open edge by a full-height glass screen, so the stair reads as a series of floating blocks.
Lights set beneath each tread wash the wall at night, and the glass lets daylight from the roof pass straight through to the rooms below.
