Canonbury Park South
Canonbury · Listed building
A frameless glass room replacing an earlier conservatory along the garden front of a listed Victorian villa, opening the principal rooms to a long garden.
01Frameless glass garden room
02Glass roof on slender steel beams
03Full-height sliding doors to the terrace
The house is a mid-Victorian villa, with polychrome brick arches, deep bracketed eaves and a cast-iron balcony. The new room runs along the garden front beneath the balcony, so the original elevation stays in view through the glass.
Islington Council granted planning permission and listed building consent in July 2007 to replace an existing conservatory. The glazing was made and installed by Cantifix, who we have worked with since 2005.

The glass room
Light along the garden front
A glass roof rests on slender steel beams fixed back to the house, and full-height sliding doors open the room to the terrace. A sandblasted glass screen at the far end gives privacy from the neighbouring house.
Inside, the old brick wall and the original doors become the back wall of the room, and a timber floor runs out towards the garden.
Evening
A lantern at the end of the lawn
Small lights set into the floor and the terrace pick out the brickwork and the timber, so at night the room glows at the end of the garden.
The steel frame went up first, fixed back to the house, before the glass was installed.
