The conservation and transformation of a Grade II listed Georgian townhouse, with a contemporary glazed rear intervention, new lower-ground accommodation and a lead-clad mansard roof extension.

03Lead-clad mansard roof extension
Cloudesley Road is a distinguished early nineteenth-century Georgian terrace. The project addressed deterioration of the historic fabric while introducing new accommodation suited to contemporary family life.
It is one of six houses we have worked on in the street.

A new lower ground, open to the garden
A significant element of the scheme was excavation beneath the existing rear closet wing, creating new kitchen and dining accommodation. This required careful structural coordination, and a conservation strategy that protected the principal Georgian rooms and the most significant historic fabric.
At the rear, a frameless glass roof, sandblasted with a fine microdot pattern, covers the new kitchen, and a walk-on glass floor bridges the lightwell. An open steel stair with perforated treads leads down from the garden. The interventions are deliberately lightweight, so the original masonry and the historic form of the building remain clearly legible.

A later phase added a lead-clad mansard roof extension, designed to sit discreetly within the established Georgian roofscape. After an initial planning refusal, the proposal was approved on appeal.
The completed scheme shows how substantial adaptation can be achieved within a listed building through sensitive detailing, an understanding of historic significance, and a careful balance between conservation and contemporary design.
