Project 119 – Cassland Road, E9

A comprehensive refurbishment and extension of a four-storey Victorian terrace in Hackney, centred around a dramatic full-height glass staircase.

The project involved the complete refurbishment of a four-storey Victorian terrace, together with a new rear extension and the excavation of a basement level to increase the usable floor area of the house.

At the heart of the design is a new staircase rising through all four storeys, creating a strong vertical connection between the levels. The staircase is formed from timber treads supported by large structural glass panels spanning the full height of the house, allowing light to pass through the centre of the building and animating the circulation spaces.

The intervention introduces openness and visual continuity within the existing structure, transforming the staircase into the architectural focus of the interior while maintaining the character and proportions of the original Victorian house.
