Islington Architects
Islington Architects is a London-based architectural practice specialising in the refurbishment, extension and careful transformation of listed and period buildings. The studio is led by Ade Fowler RIBA, who has more than two decades of experience working within conservation areas and with Grade II listed properties across London and the surrounding counties. The practice focuses on balancing the preservation of historic fabric with the introduction of thoughtful contemporary architectural interventions.
Islington Architects is an RIBA Chartered Practice, reflecting the studio’s commitment to professional standards, design quality and client care.
Alongside its conservation work, the practice is also recognised for the integration of advanced contemporary glazing within historic settings. For more than twenty years Ade Fowler has worked closely with Cantifix Glazing, delivering numerous projects that combine traditional buildings with technically refined frameless structural glass, allowing modern architectural elements to sit lightly alongside historic structures.
A significant part of the studio’s work involves navigating the complexities of the planning system and listed building legislation. Over the course of his career, Ade Fowler has personally prepared and submitted more than 400 planning and listed building applications, developing extensive experience working with planning authorities and conservation officers across London and the wider South East.
Ade has been securing planning and listed building consents from Islington Council since 2004, when he first obtained approval for works to a Grade II listed house dating from the 1790s on Charlton Place. The practice continues to undertake projects in the borough today, including new work once again on the same street.
Ade Fowler is also RIBA Certified as a Principal Designer (Domestic), providing clients with additional assurance in relation to building safety, regulatory compliance and the coordination of design risk under current building regulations.
The practice has also undertaken commissions for a number of high-profile private clients, where discretion and confidentiality are essential, with projects often carried out under non-disclosure agreements.
The practice is now based at Uncommon in Highbury, North London, where the studio continues to expand while delivering residential, heritage and contemporary architectural projects across London and the wider South East.
