Project 140 – The Hay Barn
A rural barn conversion in North Devon transforming an existing agricultural structure into a contemporary six-bedroom family home.
The project began with a unique brief from an existing Islington client to retain the form of an existing hay barn located on his farm in North Devon while converting the building into a substantial six-bedroom family dwelling.
The design respects the original agricultural character of the structure, working within the existing envelope of the barn while adapting the interior to accommodate contemporary domestic living. By preserving the building’s established form and relationship to the surrounding landscape, the proposal maintains the simple rural presence of the barn while giving it a new residential life.
The scheme received permitted development approval from North Devon Council in 2016, allowing the conversion of the agricultural building into a dwelling. The project has now been completed, transforming the former hay barn into a contemporary family home while retaining the character and proportions of the original farm structure.
